Washington-based health care research and advisory firm The Advisory Board Co. saw earnings nearly double last quarter on higher sales and an increase in contract values.

The company’s fiscal 2012 third quarter net income was $8.1 million, or 46 cents per share, compared to net income of $3.9 million, or 24 cents per share, in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue rose 33 percent to $100 million.

The Advisory Board says contract value at the end of the quarter was $386.6 million, up nearly 29 percent from a year earlier…

Merit Health sells Texas Hospitals, plans second deal

Louisville-based hospital operator Merit Health Systems LLC is selling off its current hospital portfolio in separate deals it describes as “successful monetization” of its hospital investments.

Merit, which is led local hospital veteran Ty Wilburn, already completed the sale of San Antonio, Texas-based Nix Health Care System and has an agreement to sell its New Jersey Hospital.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

FTC moves to block Omnicare takeover of PharMerica

The Federal Trade Commission has filed an administrative complaint against Covington-based Omnicare Inc., moving to stop the company’s hostile bid to buy Louisville-based PharMerica Corp.

The case will be heard before an administrative law judge at the FTC in June.

UCF approves $15.1M purchase of land for hospital

The University of Central Florida board of trustees approved the purchase of 25 acres in Lake Nona for a future teaching hospital on Jan. 26.

According to documents, the closing date would be Jan. 30. Under the terms of the deal, UCF would:

• Pay $15.1 million for the land.

• Have rights to develop 253,000 square feet of hospital space.

• Have the right to develop 115,000 square feet of clinic space.

• Have the option to buy an additional 13 plus acres until Jan. 16, 2017, at a cost of $600,000 per acre of market value…

A job fair to fill 400 positions at a new 156-bed hospital in Monroeville drew an estimated 2,700 people on Thursday, officials said.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center held the job fair at the Monroeville Convention Center to fill positions at UPMC East, the hospital network’s newest facility, which is scheduled to open in July.

UPMC officials were surprised by the turnout.
